Hotels
There is only one hotel within the naturist zone at Vera Playa - but
it is a large and good one. Run by one of Spain's largest hotel groups
- Playa Hoteles - the Vera Playa Club Hotel has around 300 rooms
- a mixture of hotel rooms, studios, apartments and some deluxe rooms/apartments
- some with a private pool for just 4 rooms.
The hotel started life as a 2 star hotel in 1989 and has continuously
developed and been upgraded ever since. It now has 4 stars and looks set
to go even further up-market. The hotel has an excellent buffet style
restaurant, with fish and meats cooked to individual order. The hotel
has an entertainments team who run various sports and activities and evening
entertainments which take place either on an outside stage or in cooler
weather in the large reception hall. Many guests feel that there is
a bit too much in the way of organised activities and entertainments,
which certainly contribute to the noise levels, especially in the evenings.
The standard of the rooms and of the cleaning and other services is very
high - indeed every square metre of outside paving is cleaned every
day (as is, of course, all indoor flooring) - something which, understandably, does not happen at the residential
developments near by which do not have the same staffing levels. If any
fault or problem is reported the hotel's efficient maintenance staff fix
it very quickly.
The hotel encircles a large inner area in which lies its vast outdoor
pool. This inner area is well sheltered by the hotel buildings which encircle
it. Many palm trees have been planted to beautify the gardens and pol
area and to provide shade. The hotel and has a variety of places to sunbathe
- a huge number of sun-beds are vailable around the pool and on a large
sundeck above the restaurant, as well as on the beach. Access to and from
the beach is via an electronically controlled gate operated by your room
key-card.
The Hotel Vera Playa Club is not open during the winter - it was tried
one year but did not prove successful - surprising perhaps given that
many hotels on the Costa Almeria and Costa de Sol do stay open all year.
Of course, many specialise in long stay/low cost winter holidays and the
Hotel Vera Playa Club is not really in that market.
Normally the hotel opens in time for Easter and closes by the end of
October.

British visitors used to find that it was more economical to stay at the
hotel as a package holiday through Peng Travel, especially if they went
at the times of the year (April/May and Sept/Oct) when Peng had special
offer periods. Now Peng Travel has ceased trading (late 2012) it is not
yet clear whether any of the smaller companies who offer package holidays
to Vera Playa will step into the vacant space left by Peng.
A 75 room Apart Hotel was to be built at the Natura World
urbanizacion, but this is still just a shell.
Two new hotels have been built in recent years at nearby Puerto Rey (outside
the naturist zone) - the Hotel Mexico Aparthotel (open all year)
and the Hotel Reina (not open in the winter).
It was understood that a new naturist hotel was to be built next
to the main road within the Parque Vera area of the naturist zone,
however this has not yet commenced construction and it seems unlikely
in the present economic climate.
A new textile hotel was to be built next to the Hotel Vera Playa
Club by the same hotel group (Playa Hoteles) - though there is
no sign yet of construction activity which has been indicated for 6 or
7 years now.It is understood that Playa Hoteles have no intentions to
build more naturist hotels either at Vera Playa or elsewhere - the nearest
they have come to it is to provide a roof terrace and pool for naturist
use at one of their hotels on Tenerife in the Canaries. It is said that
occupancy levels at the Hotel Vera Playa Club do not match those of the
group's textile hotels. Since the Credit Crunch and Property Crash of
2007/8 most new construction projects in Spain have been put on hold or
abandoned. Fortunately the naturist zone at Vera Playa was nearly fully
developed before the crash happened.
