A Naturist Paradise?
July - wall to wall sun, warm sea and pools, light sea breezes to keep the heat at bay, siestas in the hot afternoons, back to the beach late afternoon, balmy evenings - yes, it's difficult not to conclude that Vera Playa is a naturist paradise!

A good year to buy your naturist "Place in the Sun"?
The Spanish property market has hit hard times, as has the UK's.
So what is the property situation in the Vera Playa naturist zone? With the single exception of the Natura World development (see note below) you cannot now buy a brand new apartment within the naturist zone (which is now fully developed) - so there will be no further new naturist properties. As you would expect there are resales always coming onto the market and because of the credit crunch and general downturn there are probably somewhat more than usual at the moment. For UK buyers, the £ has fallen against the € - roughly speaking this just means that for sterling purchasers property prices are about stable compared with a year ago and not subject to the 15% or so annual increase which seemed to have become the norm in previous years.
So 2008 could be a good time to buy - the long term prospect for properties in the naturist zone is still good (like land they ain't making any more!) and within a year or so they are likely to be going up in value again, even if not as much as has been the case in past few years.
A note about Natura World: This is the biggest single development in the naturist zone with around 570 units. Bizarrely, the developer has failed to connect up to the main sewerage system and there are issues about the quality of the water supplied to the apartments and the local council banned occupation of the apartments. We understand that a solution has been found for the first phase (nearest the sea) - buyers have had to pay more to get mains water and sewerage connections, but the later phases still seem to be in limbo. There is also an issue about ownership of part of the land, so the Notary will not complete any purchases. Until a truly independent solicitor can guarantee you that all these problems have been solved you would be unwise to purchase a property at Natura World.

- so much more than just beaches
The Sanctuary of Saliente between Albox & Chirivel
On a visit to Vera Playa there's more to do than just lie on the beach or by the pool. There's magnificent scenery to be seen - desert & mountain ranges, picturesque villages and interesting towns. The roads are good and the views are stunning. Take a day trip in your hire car to see one or more of these: Bacares (village deep in the mountains below 6,800 feet peak La Tetica), the Sanctuary of Saliente (monastic retreat high on the mountain slopes in the Almanzora Valley), the Sierra Nevada (snow & ski-ing), Lorca (city dominated by its Moorish castle), Velez Blanco (fairy tale castle & village), San Jose (harbour village in the Cabo de Gata natural park), Almeria (the provincial capital - ancient castle, historic old town & city shopping).
Shorter trips + shopping or a meal: Garrucha (nearest small town), Villaricos (pretty fishing village), Mojacar (unmissable white village), Vera town (shops & historic buildings), Bedar (white village with stunning views), Cuevas de Almanzora (castle art gallery, picturesque town centre, impressive dam nearby),Carboneras (exciting hairpin road, attractive seaside town), Aguilas (seaside resort)
What sort of weather can I expect at Vera Playa?
Winter (Dec to Feb)
- Daytime highs around or slightly above 20°C, lows usually 5 - 10°C. In sunny weather, good for sun-bathing from 11am - 4pm. Some risk of bad weather but seldom lasts > 5 days.
Spring (Mar to May) - Daytime highs in mid 20s °C. Sun very strong from April onwards. Warm evenings from mid May. Weather generally fairly settled but not quite as reliable as summer.
Summer (June to August) - Hot (highs often 30°C+) but sea breezes keep things tolerable. Late July and August busy & noisy - nightime comes alive. Lows often well over 20°C. Weather normally very stable/reliable
Autumn (Sep to Nov) - Warm days (highs 25°C-ish), balmy evenings (high teens, low 20s), sun not too fierce, arguably the very best time, esp mid September to mid Oct. Weather can break late October to mid-Nov but some years have good Indian summer into December
When is the best time to go?
Because of its unique location - in the south-east of Spain, close to Europe's only official desert (Tabernas) but well away from the cool Atlantic - Vera Playa has a very dry climate (excellent for anyone with ailments such as arthritis and rheumatism) and is the warmest area of mainland Europe in the winter. Summers are hot but moderated by sea breezes. Most times of year are good - and naturist sunbathing is an all year round reality - weather is very stable and bad weather very rare in summer, less so in winter, but very much rarer than in the UK and northern Europe. Arguably the very best times to go are late April, May and early June, September and October. Winter and early Spring are quiet, but December, January, February & March are often delightful and typically 10°C or more warmer than the UK, but there is a greater chance of bad weather, whilst summer (late June, July, August) is very hot with siesta culture and living outdoors till the early hours the norm - and late July and August are extremely popular times for Spanish visitors and their long family holidays by the sea so everywhere is busy and buzzing then.
