Ancient towns - the real Spain's close at hand

At first glance the hinterland of Vera Playa appears to be just desert
- closer examination, however, leads to the discovery of a wealth of
ancient towns, many of them packed with superb civic buildings and period
town houses and other properties. Pictured here is the Town Hall of
the small but important town of Cuevas de Almanzora, which, in the nineteenth
century became wealthy through silver mining. Cuevas has an interesting
town centre and a recently restored castle in which there is now an
art gallery and an outdoor arena/theatre. The town is about 15 kms from
Vera Playa.
